Sources have confirmed to Inside Line that the next-generation BMW M5 will drop its 5.0L V10 engine for a twin-turbo V8. Insiders said that the direct-injected V8 will displace 4.8L and will have an output rating that will approach close to 600-hp. It will be mated to a new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The next-generation BMW M5 will also get BMW’s KERS (kinetic energy recovery system) technology adapted from Formula 1, complete with a boost button and fuel-saving technologies such as cylinder cutoff.

The new BMW M5 will hit U.S. shores in late-2011 as a 2012 model year. Before that we’ll see the 2011 BMW 5-Series, which will be unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.
